CARL KRAUSE

1891-1976

Carl Krause was born in 1891 in Russia near the Black Sea. He had a sister named Molly, who was also born in Russia. When he was young, Mr. Krause most likely lived on a farm and did many hard farm chores. Also his father worked at a shipping business on the Volga River and Carl worked for him. Mr. Krause probably didn't have much schooling, but when he walked to school, he took the basics, such as math, reading, and writing. When he was in fifth grade the President was Hoover, but he probably didn't care, because he lived in Russia. He didn't wear stylish clothes, just whatever was available, but he did wear English boots. Mr. Krause most likely didn't have time to get into trouble, because he had to work. When he played, he probably made up his own games.

Carl married in Russia once, but she died. He came to America around the age of twenty, because the family knew the Russian Revolution was starting. In fact, the Russian Czar, who was a relative of Carl's, got Carl and his parents out of Russia. So when they first moved to the United States, they went to Wisconsin, and he met Mary. Later they got married and had four children, and much later Mr. and Mrs. Krause had four grandchildren. After living in Wisconsin and then in South Dakota for a while, the Krauses moved to Engadine with some friends. Mr. Krause was a really good farmer, a family man, and smart to get to America.

Mr. Krause probably read western novels and the "Farmers Almanac". He also liked to tell stories and trade things. Carl died in 1976, most likely of old age.
