IRENE WENTLAND 1909-1988
Irene Wentland was born in Minnesota. She had one brother, one sister (Harry, Kristeen), and one dog too. She walked to the store in Engadine and bought a candy bar for five cents. She said, "Hey, I have enough money for a movie." She went to the movies and paid fifteen cents. When she went to school she wore a skirt or a dress, and the boys wore overalls. She had reading, math, and P.E. In her day there were no computers; a pencil and paper were used. They never had all these fancy games like today, but played hopscotch and jump rope, which she was really good at. On her bedroom wall she had her own drawings. When she went on her first date she was 15-16 years old. Her curfew was about 9:00 or 10:00 at night. The worse disaster in her lifetime was the world wars and the sinking of the Titanic. She liked to play the organ in her spare time. When she got older, she went to college and got a job as a teacher. She then married in 1931 in Newberry. She and Bob Wentland were married for twenty-five years and had two daughters, Connie and Sylvia. Both of her children had two, which made four grandchildren for Irene and Bob. She only had one job, which was a teacher at Gould City and Engadine Schools. Computers and TV’s would have made her job easier. Irene Wentland died in 1988 and spent the last two years of her life near her grown daughters in Williamston. She has been sadly missed.
