BERNARD SCHROEDER

1911-1982

Bernard Schroeder was born in St.Ignace, July 4, 1911. He had 3 brothers, Willam, Fred, and Henry, and a dog. His chores were farm chores. When he went to school by walking he wore bib overalls. He walked to a two room school house and studied math, reading, writing, and history.

When Bernard was in 5th grade, America’s president was Coolidge. Bernard liked to play baseball, and his favorite sports team was the Tigers. His favorite breakfast was pancakes, and he really liked to watch fights on T. V. Back then, Bernard paid 5 cents for a candy bar and 35 cents for a movie. Bernard had a curfew at 9:00PM. He went on his first date at age 16.

Bernard worked as a carpenter and was really good at it. He did all of his shopping at stores in Engadine. Finally, in 1934, he married a girl named Lydia, and they had two children, Ralph and Cornelia, and grandchildren, Aaron, Dale, Jody, Melanie, and Tommy.

In his spare time Bernard liked to fish. His most historical event was crossing the Straits of Mackinac Bridge, but the biggest disaster he ever witnessed was a train crash. Bernard Schroeder felt the best thing about the good old days was no income tax. He died in January, 1982.
