SELINA PROTON

1883-1957

Selina Proton was born in Detroit, Michigan, on January 26, 1883. She had three brothers and four sisters. They had to walk two miles to get to school. The clothes that were popular then were long skirts and button high top shoes. The chores Selina had were hauling wood and water, polishing lamp chimneys, and taking care of her pets, a dog and some chickens. She never got into any kind of trouble.

When she and her brothers and sisters got older, one brother died in World War I. The other two brothers went into the military and then lived on a farm. Two of Selina’s sisters were never married, but became teachers. Another was married and had four children. The last sister became a bookkeeper; Selina became a cook at logging camp, which was also her first paying job .She was really good at cooking and baking. She loved playing cards and praying the rosary in her spare time. She mainly shopped out of catalogs and read Michigan Farmer Magazines.

Her favorite family tradition was to make meat pies at Christmas. The biggest events of her life were World War I and when the automobile was invented. She was never married and had no children. Selina will be remembered for her cinnamon rolls, and for putting on two different colored shoes for church once, when she was in a hurry. Selina enjoyed travel to New York and once to Canada. Her goals for the future were trying to keep her house clean.
