ANNA BROCKMAN 1907-1998
Anna Brockman was born in a log cabin in 1907, and died in Manistique on March 19,1998. Her maiden name was Price and she was the second to the last out of seven brothers and sisters. The oldest was Lena born in 1892; next came, Minnie born in 1896. Then Emil was born in 1899; Charles was born in 1901,and William was born in 1903. Finally August was born in 1905. Anna was born two years before Julia who was born in 1909. Anna always had a cat and a dog in her house and had lots of chores to do. She was a farmer’s wife and child. She had five families related to her, and they all came from Germany. The only grade she went to was third grade in a one- room school. She had to walk three miles to get there and when she wasn’t in school she taught herself. Her mother died when she was three years old. While Anna was a child, President Wilson was in office. Students used books instead of computers. The games Anna played were ball, catch, and tag. One other game they played was antiover which is played with a softball. Anna was great at cooking and sewing, especially quilts. (She could grow anything anywhere.) She kept pictures of many relatives and read the Bible a lot. The discovery of electricity made these things easier for Anna. When Anna went to shop at Engadine, they would ride horses, a buggy, or a sleigh. Most of her relatives were farmers or loggers, and they also celebrated religious and other holidays, including the Fourth of July, with Anna’s big meals. A disaster in Anna’s time that happened was when a mill blew up. On December 15, 1927, she got married at Engadine, and it lasted to 1972 when he died. Anna had fourteen grandchildren and twenty -two great grandchildren. The farthest Anna ever traveled was to Battle Creek. The goal that Anna wanted to achieve was to survive. Every Memorial Day Anna put a flower on all her relatives’ graves.
